Schubert’s work combines audiovisual and hybrid media, conceptual and immersive installations or performances that includes organic matter and living organisms, algorithms and artificial intelligence. These diverse elements are not just considered material but rather become part of the artwork as meaningful creators. The artist’s work questions the relation of humans with their environment and the evolvement of matter and meaning beyond the Anthropos. Teaching concepts such as bio/body hacking, material experimentation and (non-)human-machine interactions, Schubert encourages students to investigate scenarios for a sustainable future. Schubert runs public workshops on media art and bioart methods and hosts ‘walk & talks’ in forests in collaboration with Art Laboratory, Berlin.
Prof Schubert is currently Guest Professor for Media Environments at Bauhaus-Universität, Weimar and is the co-editor and contributing author of Experiencing the Unconventional: Science in Art (World Scientific, 2017). She curated the exhibitions Stories for a more-than-human-world (2018); Inoculum – Connecting the Other (2016); and co-curated Shared Habitats / Bauhaus 100 at Ars Electronica 2019, Linz, Austria.
Recently, Schubert’s work received the Award of Excellence at the Japan Media Arts Festival 2022, SHARE Award 2021; a Prix Ars Electronica Honorary Mention (AI & Life Art 2021); and a S+T+ARTS Prize 2021 Honorary Mention. Prof Schubert was awarded a STARTS Residency (2019 and 2022), funded by the European Commission, and was artist-in-resident at the Group of Applied and Molecular Microbiology at Technische Universität (TU), Berlin (2018-20). The artist’s creative output has been exhibited internationally, for example Ars Electronica, Liz, Austria; Art Laboratory, Berlin, Germany; BOZAR Brussels, Belgium; KW Institute for Contemporary Art Berlin, Germany; Newcastle Region Art Gallery, Scotland (UK); Electro Fringe Festival, Australia; Futurium, Berlin, Germany; Kapelica Gallery, Ljubljana, Slovenia; and Museum Villa, Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Schubert’s work was featured on the VIAD exhibition, Imminent and Eminent Ecologies (2024, FADA gallery, UJ).
