Heinrich Nieuman was born in 1991 in Middelburg, Mpumalanga. At the age of fourteen he and his family moved to the city of Cape Town, where he currently lives and works. He completed a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art (2014) and a Master of Fine Art (2020) at the University of Cape Town. Notable group exhibitions include ‘The Nonrepresentational’ curated by Dineo Diphofa and Lemeeze Davids at Stevenson Gallery (2020), ‘Main Complaint’ at Zeitz MOCAA (2018) and ‘Suspension of Disbelief’ at Brundyn+ (2015). His practice involves exploring the topics of urbanisation and digitisation through video art and video installation. He references cyborg urbanism in which human and non-human elements constitute new hybridised notions around urbanisation. Within these frameworks, digital screens often serve as prosthetics that act as gateways to the more hidden networks of our cities.
